Lighting is absolutely critical in any space in your home. Lighting has functional purposes, but it also adds beauty, interest and often a WOW factor. It allows us to truly appreciate your home’s architecture, furnishings and special features, such as artwork or cabinetry. Thoughtfully appointed lighting also enhances the size and scope, colour, design and mood of your spaces.
There are actually 3 tiers of lighting that you should consider when designing your lighting plan. The first tier is AMBIENT, which defines the lighting foundation in your space. Its primary purpose is to create light that will allow you to see clearly and move safely through the room. Although it is the functional basis of your plan, it also creates texture, drama and beauty in your room. Ambient lighting is captured through centrepiece chandeliers, stunning pendants and timeless ceiling mounts.
The second tier of lighting is TASK. Just like its name implies, it directs light to a task that we are focused on. For example, pendant lighting over a kitchen island where food is being prepared. Similarly, make-up application and grooming demand extra consideration to vanity illumination. Working at a desk or cozying up in a chair to read a book also have special lighting needs, often met through floor or table lamps.
ACCENT lighting is the third tier – it is the icing on the cake. It can make a room feel finished, more striking or beautiful. This can be achieved by adding wall sconces, picture lighting, or ceiling pendants that highlight a unique feature in a room, such as a mirror, fireplace mantel or backsplash.
